Since whites are for the nonce the dominant ethnic group in the United States, it stands to reason that they might be perceived, for better or for worse, as the de facto standard-bearer for success.

I very much agree with LAP's comment about class being muddled up with issues of ethnicity. In fact, it brings to my mind an incident several years ago when affluent New York publicist Lizzie Grubman ended up backing her SUV into 16 local nightclub patrons in Southampton.

The story goes the bouncer asked her to move her SUV out of a fire lane, to which he alleges that she responded by using an epithet than calling him "white trash." She then backed up her car in a huff, hitting the patrons. She fled the scene in a friend's car before police could perform a Breathalyzer test, but ultimately served a couple months jail time and several years probation.

So what's my point? Well, if the bouncer's testimony is true, I find Ms. Grubman's alleged use of the slur quite intriguing, since both she and the bouncer were white.

I suspect that in cases such as this one with white-on-white usage of the slur "white trash," there is an attempt to somehow "racialize" socio-economic distinctions, as if there were some heretofore unknown genetic marker to distinguish the affluent from the working class.

The incident actual raised resentments among year-round working class locals in the town, who felt that the "Hampton crowd" would breeze into their town on weekend trips with an innate sense of superiority. I think it's one of the potential social diseases of wealth among socially insular circles, a "manifest destiny" on an individual scale, with all the inherent sense of entitlements and rationalizations that come with having that much socioeconomic power.

And I'm not saying all affluent whites are guilty of this, or that even only affluent whites are guilty of this. Wealth can go to anybody's head, regardless of color or creed.

But back to the point of whites being a measure of success, I don't know, but if I had to consider Lizzie Grubman as a measure of success, I think I would look for my role models elsewhere.

oh yes and about the dog thing, african americans are thought to be afraid of dogs because they were chased by them in the slave times. i don't know about that really, but again stereotypes generalize minorities as being afraid of dogs. i think though that dogs as domestic pets is more of Western thing and in developing countries more of an upper class thing (a luxury). in the past dogs served a purpose like herding. now they are just pleasure objects for us. if you travel to someplace like thailand or colombia dogs run free on the street and can be rabid and dangerous. certainly a good reason for some "minorities" to be afraid of them. we however grow up with totally tame dogs that are afraid of their own shadow. again i was being sarcastic, playing on these stereotypes.

no the "someday" having kids I refer to implies not having them too early (before career and financial stability). i am sarcastically alluding to the white American "stereotype" of 2.2 kids, in the 'burbs, in a house with a white picket fence. AKA the middle class American dream. boring and statistically probably not even true anymore. it was a big thing in the 80s when I was a kid, but since your foreign you wouldn't know that. :-D
